Mustangs Fall Short in Close Contest Against the Ravens

ATCHISON, Kan.  Mount Mercy's womens basketball team delivered a spirited effort but came up short in a 70-66 loss to Benedictine on Saturday in a Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup. Despite a balanced offensive attack and strong defensive play, the Mustangs were unable to overcome the Ravens' late-game execution.

Mount Mercy was led by Madison Skelton, who tallied 18 points on an efficient 8-of-14 shooting performance. Claudia Vanzant dominated the glass, recording a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, including three on the offensive end. Sam Kiel also made significant contributions with 16 points, including four three-pointers.

The Mustangs shot 41.4% from the field (24-of-58) and connected on 6-of-16 from beyond the arc (37.5%). They excelled at the free-throw line, converting 12-of-16 attempts for 75%. The team generated 19 points off 13 turnovers by Benedictine and maintained defensive pressure throughout the game.

Despite their strong showing, Mount Mercy struggled to contain Benedictine's perimeter shooting. The Ravens shot 45.5% (10-of-22) from three-point range and 42% overall. Benedictine's Laurie Dubbert led the way for the home team with 15 points and nine assists, while Jessica Jacobs added 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting.

The game remained tight in the final minutes. A key three-pointer by Benedictine's Kaitlyn Nicholson at the 35-second mark pushed the lead to six, sealing the game for the Ravens. Mount Mercy's free throws by Annika Headington with two seconds left brought the final deficit to four.

The Mustangs aim to regroup in their upcoming home game against Baker on Monday, December 16, before heading into the holiday break. Tip-off is set for 4:00 PM.
