Late Wildcat Surge Overpowered the Mustangs

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Mount Mercy's women's basketball team fell 76-70 to Baker after a late Wildcat surge in the fourth quarter.

Right from the tip-off, the Mustangs appeared to have momentum on their side. In the first quarter, Mount Mercy shot an impressive 60% from the field while holding Baker to just 29.4%. The second quarter produced a similar result in favor of the Mustangs, but the Wildcats applied more pressure, shooting 8-for-14 from the field.

The second half saw a shift in momentum, as the Wildcats began to take control. In the fourth quarter alone, Baker outscored Mount Mercy 23-12, securing a 76-70 victory.

The Mustangs were led offensively by Annika Headington, who finished with 21 points, including a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Claudia Vanzant also contributed 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting. Sadie Struchen joined them in double figures with 11 points, knocking down 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

For the Wildcats, Sophia Barrett led all scorers with 28 points on 11-for-16 shooting while also grabbing six rebounds. Rihanna Blanchard and Taniya Tease also finished in double figures with 16 and 11 points, respectively.

The Mustangs will return to action on February 12 when they host Culver-Stockton, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
