FAYETTE, Mo. - Mount Mercy's women's basketball team dropped their regular season game falling to the Central Methodist Eagles on the road, 82-69.
A slow first quarter proved costly for the Mustangs, as they managed only seven points while shooting just 15%. They bounced back in the second quarter, scoring 26 points on an impressive 64.3% shooting from the field. However, the Eagles controlled the second half, outshooting the Mustangs and securing an 82-69 victory.
The Mustangs finished the game shooting 26-for-60 from the field and converting 11-of-12 free throws, while the Eagles shot 31-of-66 from the field and went a perfect 14-for-14 from the line.
Claudia Vanzant led the Mustang offense with a double-double, recording 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Malie Marfil added 12 points, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, while also collecting five rebounds and dishing out four assists. Sadie Struchen rounded out the Mustangs' double-figure scorers with 12 points, knocking down four of her five three-point attempts.
Sharay Trotter led the Eagles with 16 points on 7-for-15 shooting, while Nautica Washington contributed 15 points and seven rebounds.
Mount Mercy (16-11, 14-10 Heart) will be back in action on Tuesday, February 25, traveling to Marshall, Mo., to take on Missouri Valley in the opening round of the postseason. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
