Mustangs Outpaced by Vikings in Conference Matchup

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy women's basketball dropped a 68–45 conference result to Grand View on Wednesday evening at Hennessey Rec Center, concluding the first half with a scoring drought that shifted the momentum permanently in favor of the Vikings.

Grand View created separation with a 14–2 scoring margin in the second quarter, capitalizing on Mount Mercy's turnovers and limiting the Mustangs to 1-for-11 shooting from the field in the frame. The Mustangs moved to 5–5 overall and 2–2 in league play.

Mount Mercy opened the game with early production from Sydni Morris, who converted two field goals and assisted on another during the first-quarter possession cycle. The Mustangs held a 4–2 advantage at the 7:44 mark before Grand View executed a perimeter-oriented stretch, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from Anna Gossling.

Despite the Vikings' early surge, Mount Mercy closed the quarter within two possessions after a late jumper by Sadie Struchen pulled the game to 19–17.

The second quarter featured extended defensive sequences by both teams, but Grand View generated repeated scoring opportunities through forced turnovers. Mount Mercy committed six turnovers in the period, and Grand View converted at the free-throw line, going 7-for-8. The Mustangs did not register a field goal in the frame and trailed 33–19 at halftime.

Mount Mercy adjusted its rotation in the third quarter and produced improved perimeter efficiency. Taylor Rose recorded eight points in the period, including two made 3-pointers off catch-and-shoot actions. Isabel Wallschlaeger added a 3-pointer that cut the deficit to 44–27 with 5:15 remaining in the quarter.

Mount Mercy posted a 4-for-6 mark from beyond the arc in the frame, but Grand View countered with a 57.9% shooting performance, scoring 24 points and extending its lead to 57–32 entering the fourth.

In the final quarter, Mount Mercy saw continued production from Aubrey Luvan, who logged seven points while converting three field goals off half-court actions. The Mustangs also generated scoring from the foul line, with Struchen going 3-for-3. However, Grand View maintained control on both ends of the floor, utilizing 10 total steals and a 24–3 advantage in points off turnovers to close out the contest.

Luvan led Mount Mercy with 12 points on 5-for-13 shooting. Rose finished with eight points, nine rebounds, and one block. Morris added six points, four assists, and four rebounds. Candace Baker contributed nine rebounds off the bench, including multiple second-chance opportunities. As a team, Mount Mercy shot 30.9% from the field and 35.0% from 3-point range while totaling 40 rebounds.

Grand View was paced by Gossling's 27 points on 9-for-18 shooting, including five made 3-pointers. Taryn Ottemann added 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting, and Claire Galbraith recorded eight rebounds and four assists. The Vikings shot 37.7% overall and secured 18 bench points.

Mount Mercy recorded seven assists on 17 made field goals and committed 23 turnovers. Grand View converted 13 of 18 free throws, while the Mustangs finished 4-for-7 at the line.

The Mustangs will return to conference play this weekend as they travel to Atchison, Kan., to face Benedictine on Saturday, Dec. 6, with tipoff scheduled for 12 p.m.
