Mustangs Come Up Short in Post-Break Conference Contest

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Mount Mercy women's basketball team fell 74-58 to Missouri Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Hennessey Recreation Center in a Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup. The Mustangs moved to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in league play, while the visiting Spartans improved to 5-8 overall and 4-3 in conference action.

Mount Mercy competed through the opening half, trimming early deficits and keeping the game within two possessions for extended stretches. Missouri Baptist carried a 35-31 advantage into halftime after shooting 50 percent from the field in the second quarter. The Spartans extended the margin in the third period, outscoring the Mustangs 20-14 to establish separation heading into the final frame.

The Mustangs finished the contest shooting 35.7 percent from the field (20-of-56) and 25 percent from three-point range (7-of-28). Missouri Baptist converted at a 46 percent clip and connected on eight three-pointers, generating consistent perimeter scoring throughout the afternoon.

Candace Baker led Mount Mercy with 13 points off the bench, accounting for nearly half of the Mustangs' reserve scoring. Taylor Rose and Sadie Struchen each finished with 10 points, with Rose adding a team-high eight rebounds. Taylor Wells scored eight points, while Isabel Wallschlaeger contributed five points and three assists.

Mount Mercy totaled 36 rebounds, trailing Missouri Baptist by two on the glass. The Mustangs collected 10 offensive rebounds and scored nine second-chance points, but were limited by 18 turnovers, which led to 15 points for the Spartans. Missouri Baptist also held a 38-24 edge in points in the paint, applying consistent pressure inside.

Missouri Baptist was led by Riley Jansen, who finished with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and Abigail Williams, who added 12 points and seven rebounds. Paula Puzule scored 11 points and distributed three assists, while the Spartans' bench produced 32 points, creating depth advantages across multiple lineups.

The game featured five lead changes and was tied once, with Mount Mercy holding its largest lead at six points in the opening quarter. Missouri Baptist's largest lead reached 20 points in the fourth quarter following a stretch of efficient shooting and defensive stops.

Defensively, the Mustangs recorded four steals and one block, while Missouri Baptist posted five steals and one block. Both teams were scoreless in fast-break points, with the contest primarily decided in half-court execution and rebounding efficiency.

Mount Mercy will continue conference play on the road, traveling to Oskaloosa, Iowa, for a matchup at William Penn on Wednesday, Jan. 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
