Fifth Season (2020-21 to present)
Record at Mount Mercy: 49-58

Hailing from Prairie City, Iowa, Schuring became head coach of the Mustangs prior to the 2020-21 season, leading the Mustangs to their best record since 2012 in the 2023-24 season. With over 30 years of coaching experience, Schuring is notorious for helping build programs to new heights. He began his career coaching and teaching for numerous high schools across Iowa and Illinois. Between 1989-96, he accumulated over 100 wins in just seven seasons as a head coach, won two conference championships, and made an IHSAA State Tournament Appearance. Following the 1996 season, Schuring began his college coaching career as an assistant for Iowa Wesleyan College. During his two seasons at Iowa Wesleyan, Schuring was the men’s basketball recruiting coordinator, designed and administered off-season player development programs, and was responsible for on-court coaching of post players and team defense.

After just one stint as a college assistant, Schuring got his first shot to lead a college program in 1998 for the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, Kan. At USM, Schuring was not only the head coach of the men’s basketball team, he was also the assistant athletic director. Starting with just four wins in the first season, Schuring helped build the program to a school-best 25 victories in his third year. The 25 wins earned Schuring’s team the 2001 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Championship, a Sweet 16 appearance in the 2001 NAIA Division II national tournament, and himself the KCAC Coach of the Year award.

Schuring's next stop was in Madison, S.D., where he served as head coach of the men’s basketball team at Dakota State University from 2001-05. There, Schuring not only coached basketball, but was also an instructor for the physical education and sports management programs. Once again, Schuring helped rebuild the basketball program from four wins in his first season to 16 wins in his final season, the school’s best in the previous 25 years. During his time at Dakota State, Schuring also served as the NAIA-NABC president from 2003-04 and his team earned DAC-10 runner-up in 2004-05.

Schuring’s final coaching stint before Mount Mercy was a stop at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he served as an assistant from 2006-14, then again for the 2016-17 season. At Luther, Schuring was not only a coach but an instructor of health and physical education courses. Once again, Schuring helped rebuild the men’s basketball program from four wins in his first season to 19 by year five, helping the Norse claim two IIAC Championships in the 2010-11 and 2012-13 seasons.

Along with his long-tenured college coaching career, Schuring founded TNT5 Basketball Development L.L.C. in 2008. There, Schuring has trained, coached, and mentored more than 1,000 athletes across Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois.

Schuring is married to his wife, Tracie, and together they have three children, Drake, Taylor, and Maggie. Drake is currently the head boys basketball coach at Waverly-Shell Rock High School and the director for TNT5 Basketball Development. Taylor is a first grade teacher at Tripoli High School. Maggie is a student.
