Second-seeded Mustangs win Leatherneck Classic
QUAD CITIES -- Mount Mercy finished second in qualifying, then rolled through the match play bracket to win the Leatherneck Classic this weekend. Katrina McCarthy earned her first collegiate all-tournament team honor while Ayra Nur Jehan Aminuddin and Jenna Williams also finished in the top 10 individually.
Wichita State earned the top seed after posting a total pinfall of 9,336. Mount Mercy was runner-up with 8,812. St. Ambrose (8,723), Davenport (8,678), Newman (8,649), St. Francis (8,601), Rock Valley (8,503), and William Penn (8,474) joined them in the match play bracket.
The Mustangs needed three games to beat seventh-seeded Rock Valley in the quarterfinals (203-177, 186-193, 166-153), swept sixth-seeded St. Francis in the semifinals (222-201, 210-177), then went three games again to defeat eighth-seeded William Penn in the finals (181-152, 152-180, 201-186).
Mount Mercy is back on the lanes in two weeks when they head to Fairview Heights, Ill., for the National Collegiate Team Match Games on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 27-28.
