Mustangs Rally From Behind to Take Third Straight Tournament Crown
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Mount Mercy women's bowling team overcame a deficit on the final day to claim their third straight tournament victory, winning the Kohawk Invitate in Cedar Rapids.
After qualifying, the Mustangs would trail host Coe College by 213 pins and second place Judson by 206 pins. By the time it was all said and done, the Mustangs would make up the 200-plus pin deficit to storm back into first place, taking down second place Judson by 31 pins, while surpassing Coe's total by 215 pins after the baker games.
Sophomore Brooke Salzman would lead the Mustangs varsity bowlers with a pinfall total of 980 through qualifying, good for an average of 196 pins per game. Salzman would bowl a pair of games above 200, with her best game coming in the fourth with a 206. The next varsity bowler was Jaelle Hamman finished 16th overall with a 930 total pinfall count, good for an average of 206.
The JV bowlers also enjoyed a lot of success at the Kohawk Invite, as Chloe Day and Emma Punter would finish ahead of Salzman in fifth and sixth, respectively. Day would end up on the all-tournament team in fifth place, ending with a total pinfall of 1024, good for an average of 204.8 pins per game. Day would bowl a tournament high 245 in her third game. Punter would finish in sixth with 988 pins, bowling three games over 200, with a tournament high of 214 in her first game.
The Mustangs will take a week off before returning to the lanes on February 8 at the Cedar Valley Invite in Waterloo.
