Miller is third as Mustangs run away with team title
FULTON, Mo. - The Mount Mercy women's golf team secured their first team win of the spring season after jumping out to an 11-stroke lead thru round one of the William Woods Spring Invite held at the Tanglewood Golf Course. Despite battling cold weather and rain, the Mustangs increased their lead on day two, winning by an impressive 13 strokes on Tuesday evening.
Leading the charge for Mount Mercy was Kirsten Miller, Breanna Felderman, and Lucia Larruscain. Through the first 18 holes, Miller and Felderman were tied for first after a three-over par outing. Round two proved to be more difficult due to unfavorable weather conditions, leading to higher scores from the entire field. That trio finished in the top five, led by Miller who was third, using four birdies and 20 pars for a score of 154 (75-79). Felderman was fourth (75-81=156) and Larruscain tied for fifth (79-78=157) as she was one of two Mustangs to improve her score from round one to two. Gracie Murray tied for 25th (81-84=165) and Aoi Ito tied for 37th (81-89=170) to round out the Mustang five. Also competing for Mount Mercy as individuals were Kaitlin Hotchkiss (tied / 48th 89-88=177) and Amelia Lueck (59th / 89-99-188).
In a 14 team tournament, the Mustangs were the only team to shoot under 315 for a round. Mount Mercy was +22 through round one and finished at +56 for a total of 632 (310-322) to claim the team title. Bellevue (Neb.) was second (321-324=632), Central Methodist (Mo.) was third (328-318=646), Lincoln (Neb.) (324-327=651) and Columbia (Mo.) (334-317=651) tied for fourth.
Mount Mercy travels back to Missouri next Monday and Tuesday, April 3-4 to compete in the Park University Spring Classic at the Deuce Golf Course in Parkville, Mo. Tee times have not yet been announced.
