Statesmen edge Mustangs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- After a scoreless first half, William Penn found the back of the net in the 68th minute to slip past Mount Mercy, 1-0, in Tuesday night's Heart of America Athletic Conference women's soccer match at Hadzic Field.

The Statesmen (3-10-0, 2-9-0 Heart) out-shot the Mustangs, 17-5, but weren't able to capitalize on most of their eight shots on goal. The lone exception was Ouriya Maiga's header after a ricochet off the crossbar. Sarah Johnson (SR/Middle Amana, Iowa) stopped seven shots for Mount Mercy, who only managed one shot on goal in the match.

Mount Mercy (1-8-0, 0-8-0 Heart) will play three straight on the road, starting with a trip to Fayette, Mo., on Saturday to face Central Methodist at 3:00 p.m.
