First half goal holds up for Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- Cornell's Sanne Croes found the back of the net in the 31st minute and despite an advantage in shots, the Mount Mercy women's soccer team couldn't score an equalizer and dropped a 1-0 decision to the Rams on Wednesday.

The Mustangs are now 1-1-0 after a pair of non-conference matches against NCAA Division III opponents. They shut out Coe, 2-0, in their season opener on Aug. 28. Mount Mercy has one match left before opening Heart of America Athletic Conference action, and that's a home contest against Hannibal-LaGrange on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 2:00 pm at Hadzic Field at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.

Wednesday's match featured 13 total shots by the Mustangs and nine by the Rams. Mount Mercy placed six on goal compared to four by Cornell, and all six were stopped by Ram goalkeeper Elise Thomason-Larsen. Mustang keeper Grace Byers recorded three saves.
