Schebring's golden goal saves Mustangs
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- After a Sydney Shultz goal with 52 seconds left sent the match into overtime, Kalyn Schebring's golden goal less than four minutes into the extra period gave the Mount Mercy women's soccer team a 5-4 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange in their final non-conference match of the season on Saturday at Hadzic Field.
A pair of early goals by Sydney Busse (17') and Ayaka Matsumaru (26') made it appear as though the Mustangs would run away with the match, but thing quickly changed. The Trojans got on the board in the 36th minute, then level the match shortly after halftime on a goal by Faith Bridges (48').
Mount Mercy appeared to take control once more after Matsumaru scored for the second time (56'), but Bridges struck again less than a minute later and Madilynn Lombardo (72') put Hannibal-LaGrange in front with just under 19 minutes remaining. With the Trojans clinging to a 4-3 lead and time running out, Tiara Munoz set up Shultz (90') to tie the match. That momentum carried over to the extra period and culminated with Schebring's goal (94'), assisted by Shelby Vermuelen.
The Mustangs (2-1-0) open Heart of America Athletic Conference action this week against Grand View and Central Methodist. Mount Mercy takes on the Vikings (3-2-0) on Tuesday at 5:00 pm at the Cownie Complex in Des Moines, then hosts the 8th-ranked Eagles (3-1-0) at 2:00 pm on Saturday at Hadzic Field.
