Vikings overtake Mustangs in second half

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Mount Mercy put Grand View in a hole early, but the Vikings roared back in the second half to defeat the Mustangs, 4-2, in a Heart of America Athletic Conference women's soccer opener on Tuesday night at the Cownie Complex.

First-half goals by Ayaka Matsumaru (8') and Shelby Vermuelen (27') had Grand View on its heels in the first half. After intermission, however, things turned quickly as Sharon Fung (50') and Vanessa Perez-Sandov (53') leveled the match only moments after the break.

An own-goal by the Mustangs (55') put the Vikings in front for good and they added another by Ashlyn Williams (61') to salt the game away. Grand View had a huge advantage in total shots (35-6) and shots on goal (19-5). Mount Mercy's Grace Byers stopped 14 shots while Celenka Hommel made three saves in 90 minutes.

Eighth-ranked Central Methodist (3-0-0) comes to town on Saturday with kickoff slated for 2:00 pm at Hadzic Field at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex in Cedar Rapids.
