Pride down Mustangs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Clarke built a 2-0 halftime advantage and withstood strong second-half play by Mount Mercy to defeat the Mustangs, 3-1, in Tuesday's Heart of America Athletic Conference women's soccer match at Hadzic Field at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.

The trio of Genevieve Cruz, Shannon Catchur, and Morgan Catchur provided all of the offense for the Pride. Cruz scored twice (27' 72'), Morgan Catchur once (32'), and all three Clarke goals were assisted by Shannon Catchur. Sydney Busse (61') notched her second goal of the season for the Mustangs on an assist by Isabel Alvarez.

Goaltending was solid by both teams. Brynlee Ward of Clarke faced five shots on goal by Mount Mercy, stopping four. Mount Mercy keeper Grace Byers, who tallied 14 saves in the Mustangs' scoreless draw with MidAmerica Nazarene on Saturday, added six more against the Pride.

Mount Mercy (2-5-1, 0-4-1 Heart) is on the road at Park this weekend. Kickoff is slated for noon in Parkville, Mo. After that, the Mustangs are back at Hadzic Field to host Missouri Valley on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 1:00 pm.
