Mustangs Offense Overpowers Briar Cliff, Securing Weekend Victory
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy secured a 2-1 victory over Briar Cliff on Saturday afternoon at Hadzic Field as the offense overpowered the Chargers efforts.
The Mustangs broke through in the 27th minute when Renata Bernal-Martinez converted off an assist from midfielder Savannah Stout from well outside the box, finishing the chance to put Mount Mercy ahead 1-0. Despite Briar Cliff's attempts to establish possession, the Chargers (0-1-0) entered halftime without a shot on goal, while the Mustangs generated consistent pressure with four corner kicks and seven first-half attempts.
Mount Mercy extended its lead in the 67th minute after forward Brielle Bastian converted from the penalty spot, doubling the advantage to 2-0. Briar Cliff responded, increasing its attacking output in the second half. The Chargers tallied five shots after the break, including a goal in the 85th minute when forward Sierra Brooks scored unassisted to cut the deficit to one.
Despite late fouls and a yellow card issued to Bernal-Martinez in the final minute, Mount Mercy held firm defensively, putting pressure on the Chargers offense and forcing crucial turnovers. Goalkeeper Manuela Gutierrez went untested across 90 minutes, while her counterpart, Briar Cliff's Caitlin Anderholm, made two saves on nine Mustang shots.
The match was physical throughout, with Mount Mercy committing 16 fouls to Briar Cliff's eight. The Mustangs maintained a narrow edge in overall chances, outshooting the Chargers 9-5, though Briar Cliff produced two late corner kicks that forced additional defensive organization from the hosts.
Bernal-Martinez and Bastian each finished with one goal, while Stout recorded the lone assist of the contest. Brooks led Briar Cliff with the team's only goal and shot on target.
The Mustangs will next hit the road for a pair of matches, starting on August 29th with a showdown against Trinity Christian in Palos Heights.
