Mustangs Post Strong Showings at Weekend Meets

WAVERLY, Iowa — At the Friday Knight Lights Indoor Meet, Mount Mercy University athletes shone, with Abby Knepper and Emma Althoff each securing event wins. Knepper claimed the women's mile in 5:12.12, and Althoff took the 3000 meters with a time of 11:33.82. Meanwhile, Brooklyn Johnson delivered a strong performance, finishing second in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.29 meters.

The Mustangs demonstrated their prowess across various events. Johnson not only reached the finals in the 60 meters, finishing seventh with a time of 8.06 seconds, but also placed eighth in the preliminaries. Knepper added to her mile win with a 15th-place finish in the 800 meters, clocking in at 2:26.20. Althoff's victory in the 3000 meters was complemented by Kalin Rotzoll's sixth-place finish in the same event with a time of 10:40.12.

In the field events, Carla Santos soared to a second-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 3.10 meters. Johnson continued to impress with her second-place long jump performance of 5.29 meters. The Mustangs' relay teams also showcased their talent, with Squad A finishing fifth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:15.10. These results underscore the depth and talent within the Mustangs lineup.

Johnson was a standout for the Mustangs, notching a second-place finish in the long jump and securing seventh in the 60 meters finals. She also played a key role in the team's fifth-place finish in the 4x400 relay. Knepper excelled in the mile, clinching first place, and contributed a 15th-place finish in the 800 meters. Althoff's win in the 3000 meters rounded out a successful meet, while Santos's second-place pole vault finish added to the team's achievements.

On Saturday, Mount Mercy's Kylie Smither, a freshman, led the charge in the women's shot put at the Grinnell Invitational, securing seventh place with a throw of 11.76 meters and adding two points to the team's tally.

Smither's performance was the highlight for Mount Mercy, with her seventh-place finish in the shot put. Close behind, sophomore Claire Geerts landed in 13th place, achieving a distance of 10.54 meters. Fellow sophomore Natalie DeFord claimed 17th with a mark of 10.41 meters, and freshman Savannah Slobodnik took 18th, reaching 10.08 meters. Junior Jaclyn Wooldridge threw 9.96 meters to earn 20th place, while freshman Allee Clark finished 23rd with a mark of 9.48 meters.

In the women's weight throw, Wooldridge made her mark by finishing 10th with a throw of 13.08 meters. Freshman Slobodnik followed closely in 13th, marking 12.98 meters. Smither also contributed with a 12.66-meter throw, securing 15th place. DeFord finished 16th, recording a mark of 12.58 meters, and Geerts placed 18th with an 11.92-meter throw. The Mustangs showcased a strong presence in the field events, with notable efforts across the board.

Smither's notable performances included her seventh-place finish in the shot put and a solid 15th place in the weight throw with a distance of 12.66 meters. Wooldridge also stood out in the weight throw, finishing 10th with a 13.08-meter effort, and came 20th in the shot put with a mark of 9.96 meters. Freshman Slobodnik was 13th in the weight throw, recording 12.98 meters, and 18th in the shot put with a 10.08-meter throw.

Looking ahead, the Mustangs are set to host their next event in Davenport, Iowa. The competition is on Saturday, February 7.
