Mustangs Sweep Peru State to Close the Weekend

PERU, Neb. - The Mustangs rounded out the weekend with a sweep of Peru State, taking down the Bobcats 13-0 in game one before holding on for a 6-5 win in game two.

Game One

Five different Mustangs recorded at least two hits in the game, as Jeremy Figueroa, Bryce Brown, Garrett Dennis, and Drew Terpins would end in a tie for the team lead in RBIs, each recording a pair.

Terpins would record his two RBIs in the second inning to open the scoring, blasting a two run shot to make it 2-0. The fourth inning is where the Mustangs dealt most of the damage, rattling off six runs in the inning. Figueroa got it started with a single to left, while Brown added an infield single to extend the lead to four. Dennis continued to tear through oppenents pitching, adding a two-RBI single to center, ending his day perfect at 2-2 with a pair of RBIs. Derek Einertson would follow with an RBI double to right, while Dennis came around to score on an error to round out the inning.

In the fifth, Figueroa drove in his second run on a single to left, while Tyler Pecson added a sacrifice fly to center. Rounding out the Mustangs scoring in the sixth was Einertson scoring on an error by the Peru State second baseman, while Brown drove in another on a single to center.

Tyler Nagelbach was tremendous on the mound, throwing six innings of shutout ball, only allowing two hits while striking out seven. Blake Urwin was tabbed with the loss, throwing two innings and allowing two runs on three hits.

Game Two

The scoring in game two started similar to the first game, and similar to the events of Sunday's DH, as Cedric Dunnwald homered in the third to open the scoring. Brown then added a sacrifice fly while Pecson singled to right to open up a three run lead for the Mustangs. The Bobcats got on the board on an RBI single to right, before Terpins drove in a run on a single to right in the fourth, extending the Mustangs lead to three.

In the fifth, Brown doubled to left to drive in Figueroa while Pecson singled to left to drive in Brown, making it a 6-1 game. The Bobcats then scored four straight over the next three innings, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs were able to take three of four on the road trip.

Jack Turgasen recorded yet another high quality start, throwing six innings while allowing three runs and striking out 11. Cole Conner earned his fourth save of the season, closing out the game in the seventh while allowing two runs and striking out two. Garrett Pavletich was tabbed with the loss, throwing all seven innings and allowing six runs while striking out five.

On deck for the Mustangs is a massive Heart conference matchup at home, taking on MidAmerica Nazarene at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex in Cedar Rapids, with first pitch set for Friday.
