Mustangs Head to Final Week of Regular Season with Sweep of Clarke

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Mount Mercy baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Clarke, taking three of four games in the series, taking Saturday's games 6-3 and 7-4.

Game One

The scoring got started for the Mustangs in the top of the third, as Jeremy Figueora singled through the left side to drive in Drew Terpins, as the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Derek Einertson managed to score a run on double play, as Josh Notriano was able to score to extend the lead to a pair.

In the fifth, Dean Ormonde opened the Clarke scoring with a single through the left side, scoring Randy Acosta. But the Mustangs would answer in a big way,, putting up four in the seventh. It got started with Tyler Pecson belting a solo shot to left, while Terpins drove in one on a double to left. It was then Cedric Dunnwald to increased the lead to four, while Jaden Hackbarth drove in Dunnwald to cap off the Mustangs offense. Clarke's Acosta was able to trim the deficit to four, while another run scored on a wild pitch, as the Mustangs held on for the win.

Jake Weissenberger earned the win, throwing four innings in relief and allowing just three hits while striking out three. Cole Conner earned his sixth save of the season, pitching two innings and allowing two runs while striking out four. Carson Possehl was tabbed with the loss, pitching 6.1 innings while allowing six hits and five earned runs.

Game Two

The offense struck early as Notriano drove in one on a fielders choice, while a second run came across to score on an error, as the Mustangs took a 2-0 lead just four batters in. Garrett Dennis then added his name to the score sheet with an RBI single through the left side, increasing hte lead to three. Clarke's Darin Eales drove in Alex Reynozo on a triple down the right field line, trimming the deficit to two.

On a double steal, Bryce Brown swiped second while a heads up play from Figueroa was able to score one as Figueroa stole home. Hackbarth would then drive in two on a single through the left side, increasing the lead to 6-1. Clarke managed to get three runs back over the next couple innings, as Ormonde capped off the scoring with a two-run homer.

Michael Schaul earned the win, improving his record to 5-1, throwing 2.1 innings and allowing two hits and striking out three. Erik Kiewiet earned his second save, closing out the game in the seventh and striking out one. Kurisu Ueta was tabbed with the loss, throwing two innings and allowing four runs. 

The Mustangs will close out the regular season with a big series at home vs. Grand View next week, celebrating Senior Day next Saturday.
