Mustangs Fall on Senior Day to Peru State

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Mustangs honored six seniors on Saturday within the men's basketball program, as the team dropped the contest with Peru State, 73-59.

The Mustangs (3-23, 2-20 Heart) were led on offense by Jaxson Fried, scoring 17 points on eight made field goals, including one three. He would be joined in double figures by senior Rusmir Hamzic, who would add on 14 points on 7-12 shooting. The trio of Aidan Yamilkoski, Jackson Tegeler, and Cameron Williams would each add six points for the Mustang offense.

The Bobcats (20-6, 16-6 Heart) were paced on offense by Ty Griggs, dropping a team high 16 points. Four Peru State starters, Chris Peoples, Aaron Miller, Carlos Hines, and Christian Tidiane, would each join Griggs in double figures, with Hines leading the starting lineup in points with 14.

The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on layups by Hamzic and Yamilkoski before Peru State answered with six straight. Following a couple of Peru State buckets later in the half, Cameron Williams would drain a pair of threes to make it a one point game. The Bobcats were able to extend their lead to as much as 16 in the first half before the Mustangs would claw their way back to only trail by nine at the break.

The second half saw a lot of back-and-forth action as a pair of seniors, Will Raife and James Aschenbrener, would check into the game, each scoring buckets on their lone shot attempts in the matchup, but the Mustang comeback would not be successful as timely buckets from Peru State down the stretch would seal the game.

The Mustangs will return to Hennessey Rec Center on Wednesday, playing their final home game of the season against Clarke, with tipoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
