Mustangs upset Pioneers in overtime
OLATHE, Kan. -- Yu Sasaki converted a penalty kick less than four minutes into the first overtime period, sending sixth-seeded Mount Mercy into the semifinals of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship with a 1-0 decision over third-seeded and 17th-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene in a Friday quarterfinal.
Sasaki was taken down in the box by Pioneer goalkeeper Andrea Dorella, setting up the game-winning PK in the 94th minute. That broke a scoreless tie that saw offensive stats evenly matched. Mount Mercy (10-8-0) put three of 12 total shots on goal while MidAmerica Nazarene (11-6-1) put three of 13 shots on frame in the rematch of a 1-0 victory by the Pioneers on Sept. 25 in Cedar Rapids.
The Mustangs go to Marshall, Mo., to face second-seeded and eighth-ranked Missouri Valley (14-4-0) in the Heart of America semifinals on Tuesday at 7:00 pm. The Vikings scored a pair of late goals to defeat the Mustangs, 2-0, in a tightly contested match on Oct. 9 in Cedar Rapids.
