CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A pair of late second half goals propelled the Mustangs past cross-town rival Coe, 2-0, in the 2025 season opener at Hadzic Field.
The Mustangs would maintain heavy control of the ball in the game, holding the ball for a majority of the first half, limiting the Kohawks to just two shots in each half. Neither team was able to generate much offense in the first half, as the first 45 minutes would end scoreless.
A majority of the second half would tell the same story as the opening half, until Pablo Ortega Herreros netted his first of the season in the 87th minute to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. The Kohawks would then apply pressure in hopes of clawing back, but the Mustangs beat the press and Leonardo Franco found Danilo Obradovic as he put it in the back of the net to seal the deal.
Despite the limited pressure put against him, Alejandro Cuende recorded a clean sheet in the season opener, recording a pair of saves. The Mustangs would outshoot the Kohawks, 13-4 in the game.
The Mustangs will return to the pitch on Sunday, taking on Dakota Wesleyan in an evening showdown at Hadzic Field, with kickoff slated for 5:30 p.m.
