DUBUQUE, Iowa — Mount Mercy generated sustained second-half pressure but was unable to find the net in a 4-0 loss to Clarke on Wednesday in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
Clarke struck early with three first-half goals, putting the Mustangs on their heels. Carles Aparisi opened the scoring in the 12th minute, followed by William Arana in the 23rd. Javi Munoz added a third in the 38th to give the Pride a commanding lead at the break. Yuto Nishio extended the margin in the 55th minute, sealing the result.
Mount Mercy (7-3-1, 4-2-0 Heart) outshot Clarke 16-11, including an 11-3 advantage after halftime. The Mustangs forced eight saves from Clarke goalkeeper Lucas Fontana, who kept his clean sheet intact despite a flurry of attempts. Tomas Parra Reyna recorded five shots with three on target, while Pedro Binnios and Leon Pozo each challenged from close range.
The Mustangs earned 11 corner kicks, nine of which came in the second half, but Clarke's back line and Fontana turned away every chance. Alejandro Cuende posted one save in relief of starter Zach Biggs, who made four in the opening 45 minutes.
The match was physical throughout, with Mount Mercy called for 23 fouls and shown six yellow cards. Clarke played the final 27 minutes with 10 men after a red card to Hector Medrano, but the Mustangs could not capitalize on the advantage.
