Bobcats dominate second, third quarters to beat Mustangs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- After an even first quarter, Peru State took over never looked back, cruising to a 69-49 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over the Mount Mercy women's basketball team on Wednesday night at Hennessey Recreation Center.

The contest was tied at 13-13 after the opening 10 minutes, then the Bobcats (7-5, 2-1 Heart) outscored the Mustangs (2-6, 1-1 Heart), 26-10, in the second period to open up a 16-point halftime advantage. Peru State won the third quarter, 18-10, before Mount Mercy gained some ground in the fourth.

Madison Dreckman's 11 points led three Mustangs in double figures. Sassy Coleman and Cristian Patron added 10 points each. Mount Mercy outrebounded Peru State, 50-46, led by Annika Headington's 10 boards. Dreckman and Coleman grabbed eight rebounds apiece.

Samantha Stewart led the way for the Bobcats, totaling 15 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Lycia Peevy totaled 14 points, nine boards, four assists, and four blocks. Libby Baumert chipped in 12 points off the bench.

Mount Mercy is at Grand View for another Heart matchup this weekend. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 pm in Des Moines.
