Warriors bounce back, defeat Mustangs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy held a 2-point advantage after the first quarter, but it was all Midland after that as the visiting Warriors bounced back to defeat the Mustangs, 75-55, in a non-conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Hennessey Recreation Center.

Midland (6-7) outscored Mount Mercy (4-9), 18-5, at the free throw line due in large part to Peyton Wingert, who was 12-of-14 at the foul line. The Warriors also outrebounded the Mustangs, 43-39, and buried 11 triples compared to just a pair of 3-pointers by Mount Mercy.

Sassy Coleman and Kyla Richardson had 10 points each to lead the Mustangs. McKenzie Stoehr added nine points. Madison Dreckman pulled down a team-best nine rebounds. Annika Headington chipped in seven points, seven boards, and four assists.

Wingert finished with a game-high 27 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and dished out three assists for the Warriors. Kennedy Darner hit six treys while scoring 19 points, Lexi Kraft had 13 points, and Erin Prusa finished with eight points and seven boards.

Mount Mercy will be off for a couple weeks, then returns to the court for the Hampton Inn Bruin Classic hosted by Bellevue. The Mustangs will play Mayville State on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 1:00 pm and then the host Bruins on Thursday, Dec. 30, at 3:00 pm at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
