Mustangs beat Kohawks, snap four game skid
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- In their first matchup since 2017, the Mount Mercy women's basketball team defeated Coe, 53-42, to snap a four game losing streak on Monday night at Hennessey Recreation Center.
The Mustangs (5-11) beat the Kohawks, 70-60, in their previous meeting on Dec. 19, 2017. It was a cold shooting night for both squads on Monday, with Coe (4-9) hitting at a 29.8 percent clip compared to 33.9 percent for Mount Mercy. The teams combined to shoot 8-of-35 beyond the arc.
The Mustangs held the Kohawks to five points in each of the first two quarters to take a 23-10 lead at halftime. Coe, which committed 27 turnovers, never led while Mount Mercy led by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs finished with 21 turnovers but collected 14 steals.
Sammy Mia led Mount Mercy with 16 points in her return from an ankle injury. She also had three steals. Kyla Richardson added 12 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Sassy Coleman pulled down a game-high 11 boards, Annika Headington dished out four assists.
Ellie Wisner led all scorers with 18 points for Coe. Kaalyn Petersen finished with a double-double that included 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also tallied three steals while Maya Lindgren had three assists.
Mount Mercy hosts William Penn on Wednesday in a Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup at 5:30 pm at Hennessey Rec Center.
