Yellowjackets get Mustangs in overtime

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Madison Skelton's layup with 44 seconds left forced overtime, but Graceland survived the extra period to escape Hennessey Recreation Center with a 75-70 Heart of America Athletic Conference women's basketball victory over Mount Mercy on Wednesday.

The Mustangs (5-5, 3-4 Heart) outrebounded the Yellowjackets (5-6, 3-4 Heart), 51-45, but were held back by 23 turnovers and a 4-of-18 (22.2%) performance beyond the arc. Graceland also finished at 40 percent shooting for the game, including a 6-of-21 showing from 3-point range.

Madison Dreckman led four Mustangs in double figures with 23 points to go along with 11 rebounds, three assists, and a pair of blocked shots. Malie Marfil added 11 points, eight boards, and five steals. Anais Bonnemaison also had 11 points and four rebounds. Skelton finished with 10 points and six boards.

Avery Walker-Henry also led her squad with 23 points plus four steals. Alana Swift contributed 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Kymani Freeman joined them in double digits with 10 points. She also had five assists.

Mount Mercy is at Baker on Saturday for a noon tip-off in Baldwin City, Kan., then the Mustangs are off until returning from the holiday break to host Culver-Stockton on Jan. 3 at 5:30 pm at Hennessey Rec Center.
