Skelton’s trey beats Wildcats

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Madison Skelton nailed a clutch three-pointer with 14 seconds left and Madison Dreckman was a block short of a rare triple-double as the Mount Mercy women's basketball team earned their first win of the new year, a 61-59 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over Culver-Stockton on Wednesday night at Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs (7-5, 5-4 Heart) trailed by two with just under two minutes to play when Anais Bonnemaison converted a traditional three-point play to put Mount Mercy in front, 58-57. After the Wildcats (4-9, 3-6 Heart) moved ahead, 59-58, thanks to a Katie Webb jumper with 27 seconds to go, it was time for Skelton's heroics. She buried a triple from the left wing and after a Culver-Stockton timeout, an Aaliyah Ortiz jump shot was off the mark at the buzzer.

Skelton finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs. Dreckman had a huge game, totaling 13 points, 16 boards, and nine blocked shots. Sadie Struchen came off the bench to knock down four treys and joined Skelton and Dreckman in double figures with 12 points.

Three Wildcats hit double digits, led by Webb's 16 points. Avery Oetting added 15 points and seven rebounds, Ortiz ended up with 14 points and a team-best eight boards.

Mount Mercy hosts Benedictine (10-4, 8-2 Heart) on Saturday at noon at Hennessey Rec Center.
