CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Mount Mercy women's basketball team captured a Senior Day victory over the Peru State Bobcats, 70-59, at Hennessey Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Right from tipoff, the Mustangs controlled the momentum. In the first quarter, they scored 13 points on 6-of-17 shooting while holding the Bobcats to just seven points. The second quarter saw a stronger effort from Peru State, as the Bobcats put up 20 points on 7-of-18 shooting. However, the Mustangs responded with a 22-point quarter, shooting 55.6% from beyond the arc and 7-of-14 from the field. Mount Mercy took a 33-27 lead into halftime.
The Mustangs carried their energy into the second half, scoring 18 points in the third quarter while shooting 77.9% from the free-throw line and limiting the Bobcats to 15 points. In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs sealed the win by outshooting Peru State, shooting 42.9% from the field compared to the Bobcats' 38.9%, securing the 70-59 victory.
Malie Marfil led the Mustangs' offensive attack with 21 points, shooting 8-for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from the charity stripe. Annika Headington, Sadie Struchen, and Sam Kiel each contributed 12 points to the victory.
For Peru State, Erison Vonderschmidt recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Natasha Deal added 11 points.
The Mustangs (15-10, 13-9 Heart) will return to action on February 19, hosting Clarke in their final home game of the regular season at 5:30 p.m.
