Second Half Push Not Enough As Mustangs Fall to Trinity Christian

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. — Mount Mercy dropped its first match of the season Friday, falling 2-1 to Trinity Christian after conceding two early first-half goals at Schaaf Athletic Complex.

Trinity Christian struck quickly, finding the net in the sixth minute when Nerea Genc capitalized on a loose ball in the attacking third. Just eight minutes later, Madison Ling doubled the lead for the Trolls with an unassisted finish that put the Mustangs in an early deficit.

Mount Mercy settled in defensively following the two-goal setback, with goalkeeper Manuela Gutierrez recording a first-half save to help stabilize the back line. The Mustangs created several opportunities before the break, highlighted by Catarina Vaz Ghobrial's strike off the crossbar in the 22nd minute and a late shot on frame from Lauren O'Toole that was turned away by keeper Michelle Urribarri.

The Mustangs pressed the attack in the second half, maintaining possession and forcing the Trolls into their defensive third. Mount Mercy earned six second-half corner kicks, repeatedly testing Urribarri, who finished with three saves on the night.

In the 70th minute, Mount Mercy broke through. O'Toole converted her third goal of the season, finishing from the right side of the box after Savannah Stout delivered the assist. The Mustangs continued to apply pressure, generating four more shots on target down the stretch, but Urribarri preserved the 2-1 result.

Mount Mercy outshot Trinity Christian 15-4 and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, but the Trolls' efficiency in the attacking third proved decisive. The Mustangs committed 16 fouls compared to five for Trinity Christian, slowing momentum in key stretches of the match.

Gutierrez played all 90 minutes in goal for Mount Mercy, facing four shots with one save. O'Toole led the Mustangs with three shots, including two on frame, while Nadine Sanchez and Emelly Padilha each added scoring chances late.

The Mustangs will next travel to Joliet, Illinois, facing off against St. Francis on September 3.
