Mustangs Extend Conference Unbeaten Streak with Win Over William Woods

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy converted two second-half goals to secure a 3-2 victory over William Woods on Saturday afternoon at Hadzic Field, extending its unbeaten conference start.

The Mustangs (4-1-2, 2-0-1) held the advantage in possession and attack, outshooting the Owls 19-7 and generating eight corner kicks. Despite trailing twice, Mount Mercy responded quickly to regain momentum.

William Woods struck first in the 30th minute when Bri Reynolds finished a service from Tess Roberts. Less than a minute later, Mount Mercy equalized as Emelly Padilha capitalized on a loose ball in the box to square the game up at one.

In the second half, the Owls again pulled ahead in the 56th minute, with Charley Luczak converting from close range on another assist by Roberts. The Mustangs answered just 23 seconds later when Lauren O'Toole connected off a feed from Orla Humphrey to level the match at 2-2.

Humphrey then delivered the decisive goal in the 64th minute, converting a penalty kick to put Mount Mercy in front. The forward led the Mustangs' attack with five shots and four on frame, while O'Toole and Padilha each added goals.

Mount Mercy's midfield play, paced by Ava D'Ambrosio and Savannah Stout, kept pressure on the Owls' back line, producing 11 second-half shots. Defensively, Eden Campbell anchored a back unit that limited William Woods to two corner opportunities.

Goalkeeper Manuela Gutierrez recorded four saves in 90 minutes, improving her record to 4-1-2. William Woods keeper Zoe Hargis faced sustained pressure, finishing with five saves.

The Mustangs will continue the conference schedule on Wednesday, traveling to Missouri to take on Culver-Stockton, with kickoff slated for 5 p.m.
