FAYETTE, Mo. — Mount Mercy's women's soccer team saw its postseason run come to an end Wednesday, falling 3-0 to top-seeded Central Methodist in the Heart of America Athletic Conference quarterfinals.
The Mustangs (7-9-2, 5-7-1 Heart) were under pressure early as Central Methodist's Luisa Schaupp scored in the sixth minute off an assist from Mariana Barreto. Mount Mercy's defense, anchored by goalkeeper Manuela Gutierrez, withstood several first-half attacks, with Gutierrez recording eight saves in 90 minutes of play.
Central Methodist (15-1-2, 12-0-1 Heart) extended its advantage in the second half when Sara Garcia found the net in the 51st minute and Schaupp added her second goal in the 62nd, both assisted by Barreto. Despite limited possession, Mount Mercy generated six total shots, including three on target from Renata Bernal-Martinez, Lauren O'Toole and Emelly Padilha.
The Mustangs earned four corner kicks and maintained composure defensively, committing 11 fouls but avoiding cautions. Central Methodist's goalkeeper Brooke Assur posted three saves in the shutout.
