Terpins Walkoff Seals Win in Doubleheader Split
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Mustangs faced off with NCAA DII foe Winona State, as the two teams split the doubleheader as Drew Terpins delivered a walkoff base hit to seal the game two win.
Game One
The Warriors of Winona State got the scoring started in the top of the first, as a double drove in Easton Arendt. The Mustangs then got on the board in the bottom half as Tyler Pecson drove in a run on a sac fly. Terpins added a second run on a groundout to short, scoring Griffen Bushnell.
Following a pair of Warrior runs in the third, the Mustangs added four in the third to take the lead back. Bryce Brown drove in Jeremy Figueroa on a double to left, while Garrett Dennis drove in Brown on a single to left. Derek Einertson would follow that up with with an RBI single, while Cedric Dunnwald capped off the inning with a sac fly.
It was the Warriors who dealt the largest blow in the fourth, scoring two on a single to right center, followed by a one out grand slam that narrowly avoided the left field foul pole, as the Warriors took a four run lead. The Mustangs scored three in the bottom of the fourth, but the Warriors essentially put the game out of reach in the sixth, scoring two more. The Warriors would then drive in three in the seventh to seal the game one win.
Brian Wrenn earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing just three hits. Erik Kiewiet was tabbed with the loss, pitching one inning and allowing three runs, while giving up the grand slam.
Game Two
The nightcap saw the Warriors jump out to a two run lead in the first three innings before the Mustangs were able to strike. Dennis drove in another run on the day, singling to left field while driving in Einertson. Michael Rivero would follow that up with a sac fly that drove in Terpins, squaring the game up at two.
The Warriors would tack on another run in the sixth, taking a one run lead on a bases loaded walk. It was then up to the Mustangs in the bottom half of the seventh with one shot to tie the game or potentially win. Following a leadoff base hit from Nick Meyer, he would advance to second on a single from Hackbarth. An errant throw from the Warrior catch would score Meyer from second, tying the game. A couple batters later, Terpins stepped up to the plate, singling over the first baseman's head to drive in the winning run in Hackbarth.
Cole Conner earned the win, pitching one inning while allowing one hit and striking out two. Theo Giedd was tabbed with the loss, allowing the walkoff hit.
The Mustangs will return to Heart conference action this weekend, taking on Peru State on the road on Saturday.
